Our closed sales put a 2021 HR-V at about AED 44,000, a 2020 at AED 41,000 and a 2019 at AED 29,000 — the drop below 2020 is steeper than the age gap suggests. Live asking prices run from AED 83,900 for a late-2010s car up to AED 83,900 for an early-2020s one.

Mechanically these are very clean. Only 4% of the Honda HR-Vs we inspect in the UAE show an engine, gearbox, suspension or steering fault, against the 11% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage here — among the best figures in the segment. Bodywork is the counterweight at 67% against the 52% expected for that class, which is city parking damage on a small car rather than anything structural; what matters is the standard of the repair on the car you are looking at.

The Honda CR-V costs similar money for a much bigger car, though it shows a mechanical fault on 26% of inspections against the 19% expected for its own age and mileage group — the HR-V is the tidier machine. The Mitsubishi ASX is cheaper and holds about 60% after five years, so it is the better value over a long ownership. The Nissan Kicks undercuts both.

Decide between the two generations first. The car built from the middle of the last decade through to 2021 uses a naturally aspirated engine and the clever centre-tank layout that gives it the flat, folding rear seat. Its 2022 replacement is a different-looking, more grown-up car with a plainer but better-finished cabin. The older one is the practical choice and the cheaper one; the newer one drives with more polish.

Somewhat behind its class, at about 48% of its value after five years against roughly 55% for SUVs of comparable size and age.
