2018 to 2021 is the sweet spot. Those are the last of the second-generation trucks — facelifted front end, the proven 5.7-litre V8, a drivetrain with no surprises left in it. The third-generation truck arrived for 2022 on a new frame with coil-sprung rear suspension and a twin-turbo 3.4-litre V6 replacing the V8: better ride, better fuel use, much more money.

The Ford F-150 is the obvious alternative at similar money, with more of them for sale to choose between. Its bodywork reads cleaner than the class, too — 30% of the F-150s we inspect show prior body or panel repair, against the 64% we would expect for pickups of the same age and mileage in the UAE. The Chevrolet Silverado sits in the same bracket. If you do not actually need full-size, the Toyota Hilux does most of the same work for far less.

Comfortably past 300,000 km when it is serviced. The Tundras we inspect in the UAE come in at a median of around 220,000 km and no fault category on this model comes in above what we would expect for pickups of the same age and mileage in the UAE. The V8 and transmission are the durable part; brakes, bushes and tyres are the running cost.
