Sell My Car in the UAE
Use Carswitch’s #1 rated service to buy or sell used cars in UAE

Selling a car in Abu Dhabi comes down to three things: pricing it right, choosing how you sell, and getting the paperwork clear before buyers show up. Do those well and most cars sell without weeks of back and forth. Here’s how to do each one, and what the transfer on TAMM involves at the end.

The short version

  • Price from real listings for your exact model, year and mileage, not from what you paid.
  • Private sales usually pay most but take the most time. Dealers are fastest but pay least. Online platforms sit in between.
  • Have the Mulkiya, service history and a clear fines record ready before you list.
  • If the car is financed, ask the bank for a liability letter before you advertise.
  • The transfer itself is done on TAMM and costs the buyer around AED 370 in fees for a normal car.

1. Get the price right

Start with what similar cars are actually listed for in Abu Dhabi. Match the make, model, year, trim and mileage as closely as you can, then look at where your car sits in that range. A full service history, one owner and no accident record put you at the top of it. Visible damage, overdue servicing or tyres that need replacing push you down.

Search used cars in Abu Dhabi for your model to see current asking prices. Remember that asking prices leave room to negotiate, so the price you settle on will usually be a little lower.

2. Choose how you sell

OptionPrice you getSpeedEffort

Dealer trade-in or cash offerLowestFastestLow
Online platform like CarSwitchClose to privateFastLow: inspection and buyer handled for you

There’s no single right answer. If you need the money this week, a dealer is simplest. If you have time and patience, a private sale gets the most. If you want a fair price without the hassle, an online platform is the middle ground.

3. Prepare the car and the paperwork

The car

  • Get it cleaned inside and out. Clean cars get more calls and better offers.
  • Fix cheap problems like warning lights, worn wiper blades or a weak battery. Buyers knock off far more than these cost.
  • Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, both sides, interior, dashboard with mileage, and the engine bay.

The documents

  • Your Emirates ID and the car’s Mulkiya
  • Service records and any warranty documents
  • Proof that traffic fines are cleared (check TAMM or the Abu Dhabi Police app)
  • A liability letter from your bank, if the car is still financed. Our guide to selling a financed car in Abu Dhabi explains this step.

4. Handle buyers safely

  • Meet in a public place in daylight, and go along on test drives.
  • Check the buyer’s driving licence before they drive.
  • Only accept payment you can verify, such as a bank transfer that has actually arrived or a manager’s cheque confirmed with the issuing bank.
  • Don’t hand over the keys until the payment has cleared and the transfer is complete.

“In Abu Dhabi the paperwork is quick once it’s clear. The sellers who wait longest are usually the ones who priced from what they paid, or who found a fine or a bank mortgage on the day of transfer.”

5. Complete the transfer

If the car is more than three years old, book a technical inspection at an approved centre. The buyer arranges insurance in their own name. Then you start the “Transfer Vehicle Ownership” request on TAMM with UAE Pass, the buyer approves and pays, and the car is registered to them. Fees for a light vehicle are AED 350 plus a AED 20 knowledge and innovation fee. Every step is in our Abu Dhabi ownership transfer guide.

6. After the sale

  • Cancel your insurance and ask about a refund for the unused months.
  • Remove the car from your Darb toll account.
  • Cancel any Mawaqif parking permit linked to the car.

What documents do I need to sell my car in Abu Dhabi?

Your Emirates ID, the car’s registration card (Mulkiya), a passing certificate if the car is over three years old, and a mortgage release from the bank if the car was financed. The buyer needs their Emirates ID and insurance in their name.

How do I sell my car fast in Abu Dhabi?

Price it in line with similar listings, have the paperwork and fines cleared before you list, and choose a dealer or an online platform rather than a private sale if speed matters most.

Is it better to sell my car privately or to a dealer?

A private sale usually gets the highest price but takes the most time and effort. A dealer is fastest but typically pays the least. Online platforms sit in between.

How much does it cost to transfer a car in Abu Dhabi?

For a light vehicle the transfer fee is AED 350 plus a AED 20 knowledge and innovation fee. Cars older than three years usually also need an inspection, which costs around AED 170.

When should I hand over the car keys?

Only after the payment has fully cleared and TAMM shows the buyer as the new owner. Until then, fines, tolls and accidents remain your responsibility.
