The last cars, 2016 to 2017, are the ones to have. The shape dates to 2009 as the FX and was renamed QX70 for 2014 with minor cosmetic work; mechanically almost nothing changed across the run, and production ended in 2017. That is unusually good news for a used buyer: a late car has the same 3.7-litre V6 and drivetrain as an early one, plus fewer years of heat and mileage on it.

The Toyota Land Cruiser costs far more, retains 63% after five years and will outlast anything here — buy it if you need to carry people and go off tarmac. The Infiniti QX50 is the newer, more efficient Infiniti and the sensible choice. The QX70 is the one you buy because of how it looks and sounds.

Its bodywork reads better than the class it sits in — prior body or panel repair on 54% of the QX70s we inspect in the UAE, against the 69% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage here. That is the profile of a car kept by enthusiasts rather than worked as family transport. The BMW X5 is cleaner still at 44% against the 65% expected for its class, and if paint history is your first filter, look there.
