Frequently asked questions

2020 or later if you can. The Discovery Sport arrived in 2015 and was heavily reworked for 2020: a new platform underneath, mild-hybrid assistance on the four-cylinder engine, a redesigned cabin and much improved electrical architecture. The 2015 to 2019 cars look almost identical outside and cost considerably less, which makes the earlier one a genuine budget option provided the service record is complete.

The BMW X5 is the better road car and carries a strong body record at 44% previous panel repair against a 65% expectation for its class, but it costs more to buy and to service. The Audi Q7 is similar money with a third row, and the weaker mechanical record of the three: 35% show a fault against 24% expected for its own class. For the full Land Rover, the Range Rover HSE is the step up.

The finding that surprises people: only 3% of the Land Rover Discovery Sports we inspect in the UAE show an electrical or electronics fault, against the 14% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage here. That is the opposite of what the marque's reputation predicts, and it holds at a typical 133,000 km. What to look at instead is the suspension and the cooling system, both worked hard by heat and speed bumps.

  • Cooling system and coolant history, tested hot and at idle.
  • Suspension bushes and dampers on higher-mileage cars.
  • Which generation — confirm whether it is the 2020-onward reworked car.

Open the mechanical and cooling sections of the CarSwitch inspection report on any Discovery Sport you shortlist — the electronics are the easy part on this car.
