2020 to 2022 is the sweet spot. The W213 E-Class arrived for 2017 and was facelifted for 2021 with the wide twin screens and a mild-hybrid 2.0-litre turbo; the W214 replaced it from 2024. The 2010 to 2016 W212 is a lot of car for very little, but its air suspension and electronics are what turn a cheap E-Class into an expensive one, so buy that generation only with a full dealer history.

The BMW 520 is similar money and the tighter drive, with mechanical faults on 8% against 17% expected for the class. The BMW 530 costs less and its bodywork reads cleaner at 52% carrying prior repair against the 64% we would expect for saloons of that age and mileage here. Take the E300 for ride quality and cabin quietness. The Mercedes C200 is the cheaper Mercedes if size is not the point.
