At the same age it makes sense. In 2017 cars an Explorer sold at AED 43,000, an Edge at AED 37,000 and an Escape at AED 20,000 — three sizes, three clear steps. A 2016 EcoSport went for AED 12,000. Asking prices across our UAE listings run from AED 9,500 for an early-2010s car up to AED 247,500 for a current-year one.

They do not, and that is the buyer's advantage: Fords average about 44% of their value after five years across the models we can measure, so a three-year-old three-row SUV competes with a new compact crossover.

Toyota returns more of your money and asks less of your patience — the honest position. Ford answers with three rows and a tow rating for what a smaller Nissan charges.

They ask more of an owner than a Japanese equivalent of the same age, and mileage explains most of it. Across more than 4,000 Fords we have inspected in the UAE, at a median of 138,000 km, 25% carry an engine, gearbox, suspension or steering fault against the 21% we would expect for cars of the same age and mileage here, and 20% an electrical fault against the 14% we would expect on that basis. That is a hard-working fleet, not a warning: read the mechanical and electrical pages of the report and price the findings in.

The Explorer is the default family answer. The Edge is the same idea a size down and cheaper to run, the Territory the cheapest way into a Ford crossover with warranty left. The Mustang is the heart purchase.
