Longer than its reputation suggests. The Cherokees we inspect in the UAE come in at a median of roughly 150,000 km and are still trading, and our inspections turn up no fault category running above what we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage here. That is the single most useful fact on this page: the car's problem is perception, not condition.

The RAV4 is the safer, more economical car and the easier one to sell on. The Jeep Compass is the smaller, cheaper Jeep but a considerably worse bet mechanically, with a fault on 33% of cars against the 16% we would expect for UAE SUVs of the same age and mileage. Within the family, the Grand Cherokee is the bigger, thirstier alternative.

2019 to 2022. The Cherokee launched in 2014 with the divisive split-headlight nose, and the 2019 facelift replaced it with a conventional face and a much better cabin — that is the line to be on the right side of. This generation ended in 2023, so the newest cars are the last of them. The 3.2-litre V6 is the engine to have and the one most cars here were sold with.

Below the class — about 40% of its value after five years, against roughly 46% for the SUVs it competes with. The Toyota RAV4 retains 56% and the Nissan X-Trail 54%, so if you expect to sell inside three years, buy one of those instead. If you intend to keep the car, the Cherokee's weak retention is what makes it cheap to buy.
